Cyrious Conversations: Chat with Darwin Buehler, Signs Now #114

In his words, how he’s using Control to save time in production and generate more sales.

Estimating...in minutes.

  • A simple quote can be turned around in a matter of minutes. Now frankly, we’re still learning it, so it can get even faster than it is now.
  • There's no shooting numbers off the top of our heads, no pen and paper, it all goes through Control.
  • Understanding our costs has allowed us to raise our prices where we were otherwise unprofitable. On the other hand, we have seen where we can squeeze more profit out and have been able to lower the price to remain competitive.

Work Orders...with every detail.

  • Print a work order in Control, and you can read it. It makes sense it's all right there. What material goes on what substrate at what size.
  • We don't waste anytime asking others about the order. We don't need to.
  • Minimal rework. Sure we goof here and there, but it's not because of missing info or an incomplete work order.

Invoicing...Getting Paid On Time.

  • Having systems in place is key. As soon as the final product is complete, the invoice is attached, and we stay on top of it to collect our money.

My Setup Experience

  • I spent probably 2 weeks, maybe 3 weeks piddling with it before we went live, and I’d say I spent 2 hours a day for 3 weeks.
  • I hear others say, " I don’t have time to set up Control." No, you don’t have time not to!
  • You’ll find you have a better handle on your costs, be returning quotes more quickly, you’ll be improving production, and production speed, and removing errors, by getting it up and running.

Looking Ahead

We’ve cut our labor costs, and costs of sales, and we continue to grow pretty rapidly.
